As a kid, I always had a big imagination.  But growing up in a relatively poor, working class family in Milwaukee, it seemed impossible to imagine film as a job – or even simply affording a video camera.  So I drew my stories on paper instead.
I self-published my own comic books, bringing them to trade shows and the local shops around town.  And at 17, I left to go to comic book school in New Jersey. There, I found that my favorite class of all was storyboarding for film.  Even my graphic novels strained to use the language of movies, mimicking cuts, dolly moves, and long takes.  I dreamt of the soundtrack.  I realized that I wanted a bigger canvas than comics could offer – but that drawing could still be a tool to help bring them to life.
I’ve since used my art skills in film, animation, graphic design, and even my product design work – and sometimes, I still draw the occasional superhero in tights.
